Philosophical Mentoring For Young Adults: How is it Different?
At SocratiCoach your thoughts and feelings are not treated as
objects of analysis to be diagnosed and "fixed." They are
acknowledged instead as the powerful
tools that you will learn to
sharpen, define, and rely upon in any situation.

Imagine how it could feel to know what you think, what you
believe, and
why. With the help of a mentor devoted to helping
you navigate your own thinking, you will learn to meet any
challenge in a way that makes sense and is acceptable
to you.

Philosophical mentoring invites you to become the most important
force and influence on your path to adulthood. Get ready to bring
your own thoughts, ideas, intellect, and questions to the table in
deciding how you will act today and who you will be tomorrow.
You may experience what are sometimes called "moments of
productive discomfort." It may sound serious, but it really just
means that getting to know yourself is not ever exactly like you
expected. I believe, however, that the pain of knowing never
comes close to the pain of not-knowing. It is a natural, normal,
and liberating part of the process that brings you to a knowledge
and respect for your own mind.
Off the Couch
The Mentor
Your mentor's primary goal is to guide you in your own thought,
not a methodology. She will encourage you to use and strengthen
your reasoning 'muscles' by asking you to trust, respect, and
pursue your own questions.

Your mentor will treat you as the autonomous, thinking, adult that
you are in the exhilarating process of becoming. She will take you
seriously. And she will challenge you to take yourself more
seriously than you ever have before.

Your mentor will guide you to the thinkers that, during their lives,
asked similar questions to yours. She will initiate you into your
rightful and timely place within a multi-generational conversation
that belongs to every conscious, questioning being. Your mentor
will assist you as you try on possibilities, as you eliminate what
does not fit, and while you decide what is right for you.
Where do we start?
Your first appointment will begin with a question that you
determine. Before you arrive, think about something that has
been troubling you and put it as concisely as you can in the
form of a question. Since
you will eventually embark upon
answering your question,
you might find these tips helpful in the
beginning.

We will write your question on the board to keep us focused.
Then, we will define some of the more important terms in your
question. We will discuss some of the emotions and
assumptions surrounding your question. Then your mentor will
ask you further questions that will help you refine your thinking
and get you closer to what you want to know.
Will it be hard?
What do I do?
Curiosity, not grades or standardized tests, defines our
intelligence as thinking beings. To meet the challenge and reap
the immense benefits of responsible questioning, you need only
a natural curiosity and a desire to seek, identify and investigate
your own thinking.  To urgently
want to know indicates your
willingness to participate in the important business of choosing
your place in the world.

Vain is the word of a philosopher which does not heal any suffering of man.  For just as there is no profit in medicine if it does
not expel the diseases of the body, so there is no profit in philosophy either, if it does not expel the suffering of the mind.
